How to Apply to the Master of Science in Construction Management

The information below applies to the in-person Master of Science in Construction on the UW Seattle campus. If you are interested applying to the online MSCM program please visit our dedicated admission page for that degree.

Minimum Application Requirements

All applicants must meet the UW Graduate School’s minimum admissions requirements of:

  • Equivalent of a four-year Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  • 3.0 GPA in last 90 quarter credits or 60 semester credits
  • Proof of English language proficiency (non-native English speakers only)

Program Standing Criteria

The criteria below are established based on an applicant’s preparation in construction management and will be used to determine an applicant’s standing (advanced or regular).

Advanced standing students complete 42 credits to meet the degree requirement. Regular standing students complete 10 additional credits of foundation courses, with a total of 52 credits, to meet the degree requirement. Please review our Graduate Curriculum page for full program requirements.

Advanced Standing

  • Applicants with a prior construction engineering and/or management degree accredited by the American Council for Construction Education.
  • Applicants who have completed the UW Construction Management certificate or equivalent academic credit program.
  • Applicants who have completed the UW Construction Management undergraduate minor.
  • Applicants without a prior degree in our core or related disciplines but with more than 7 years of full-time experience managing the budget and/or schedule of a construction project in the U.S. or U.S. territories.

Regular Standing*

  • Applicants with a bachelor’s or master’s degree from related disciplines (architecture, civil engineering, quantity surveying, project management, business administration, real estate development, and other disciplines deemed relevant to construction management by the Graduate Admission Committee).
  • Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in a non-related discipline and professional experience of less than 7 years will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
    • We strongly encourage individuals in this category to consider completing the UW Construction Management certificate or an equivalent academic credit program prior to applying to the MSCM.

*After admission, applicants with the Regular Standing and more than 3 years of full-time experience managing the budget and/or schedule of a construction project may petition to replace one or more foundation courses with other electives. Applicants being admitted into the program will be provided with a petition form after they accept the admission offer.

Apply to the Graduate School

Start the application process at the graduate school admissions portal. Create an applicant profile that will include basic applicant contact and demographic details, citizenship, your application account password, and other information.  If you are offered admission, you will be required to send original official transcripts to the Graduate School for verification of your undergraduate degree and school accreditation.

Upload Required Materials

Once you have created a profile in the Graduate School admissions portal, start a new application, select the “Graduate” application type and “Construction Management – MS in Construction Management” as your program. You will then need to upload the following information:

GRE scores are no longer required or considered for admission to the Master of Science in Construction Management.

    1. Unofficial transcripts from all previous educational institutions
    2. Statement of Purpose
      • This 1-2 page essay explains why you seek admission to the M.S. Construction Management program (see complete instructions in the online application).
    3. Personal résumé or CV (no more than 2 pages)
    4. Three letters of recommendation
      • If your resume includes more than one year of work experience, designate at least one professional recommendation from a direct supervisor. For three or more years of experience, designate at least two professional recommendations.
      • Recommendations must be submitted directly to UW through the online application system. If possible, recommenders should use an email address connected with their professional affiliation. Letters provided by applicants will not be accepted.
    5. Optional research statement for applicants interested completing the degree through a thesis pathway
    6. English Language Proficiency test scores or other documentation for non-native English speakers
    7. International applicants are required to convert their final degree score into the US 4-point system in order to obtain an equivalent GPA using the Scholaro GPA calculator. A screenshot showing the course credits, scores, and calculated GPA can be uploaded to the online application.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

After your application has been submitted, you can check the status by logging back into the online application portal.

The Construction Management Department Admissions Committee will begin to review all applications within two weeks of the application deadline. Departmental decisions are made approximately four weeks from the start of the review process and conveyed through the online application. Official letters of admission are sent by email to accepted students.
