Professor and Dean Emeritus
John Schaufelberger has taught in the College of Built Environments since 1994. He has taught both graduate and undergraduate courses in the areas of construction equipment management, construction practices, construction contract procurement, construction firm management and international construction project management. He served as Chair of the Department of Construction Management from 2002 to 2014 and Dean of the College of Built Environments from 2012 to 2019. He served the university as a member of the Faculty Senate from 1997 to 2012 and as a member of the Architectural Commission from 1998 to 2019.
A licensed professional engineer, Schaufelberger served thirty years as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers prior to joining the University of Washington faculty. He managed major public works construction projects in Asia, Europe and the Middle East, as well at many locations throughout the United States. Additionally, he has represented the United States in negotiations with foreign governments.
Schaufelberger is the author of Construction Equipment Management, published in 1999 by Prentice-Hall, and Construction Business Management, published in 2009 by Prentice-Hall. He is co-author of Construction Cost Estimating: Process and Practices, published in 2005 by Prentice-Hall; Construction Project Safety, published in 2014 by Wiley; Professional Ethics for the Construction Industry, published in 2015 by Routledge; and Management of Construction Projects: A Constructor’s Perspective, 2nd ed., published in 2017 by Routledge.
