Registration Group Policy
To ensure that Construction Management (CM) majors are able to register for required 300- and 400-level courses in a timely manner, and that students nearing degree completion have priority access to limited-capacity courses, the CM Department uses registration group codes to manage enrollment. Registration group codes are used to align course access with expected academic progress, curriculum sequencing, and degree completion timelines. This policy supports the CM Continuation Policy and the University of Washington Satisfactory Progress Policy.
| Group Code | Eligibility Criteria |
| CMBS2 (Rising CM Juniors) | Current CM majors who have not yet started CM 300-level courses, AND
Have completed a substantial portion of lower-division requirements, as determined through advisor review of the academic record This group allows limited early access to selected CM courses and does not accelerate graduation. |
| CMBS3 (CM Juniors) | Major prerequisites for the intended CM 300-level course completed, OR
Evidence that prerequisites are completed or in progress and will be completed prior to course start. Exceptions to major prerequisites require a formal petition. See Exception Petition Process below. |
| CMBS4 (CM Seniors) | Graduation application on file OR
All required CM 300-level core courses completed or in progress prior to the first day of registration Exceptions to the above criteria require a formal petition. See Exception Petition Process below. |
| CMMIN (Minor) | Student who has declared the CM Minor with their major advisor.
The CM Department periodically retrieves lists of declared CM minors and assigns the appropriate registration group. |
| Registration Period | CM 300-level courses (except CM 312. Includes CM 420) | CM 400-level courses (except CM 420. Includes CM 312) |

Consistent with departmental capacity constraints and curriculum sequencing, the CM Department generally does not make exceptions to the registration group policy for students who wish to:
- Graduate early
- Pursue study abroad
- Participate in internships
- Take one or more quarters off during the regular academic year
- Complete courses out of the prescribed sequence
Students are expected to plan their academic pathways within the established curriculum structure and registration group framework.
Registration group access will not be granted for any exception without a formally approved petition. Students requesting an exception—including prerequisite waivers or course sequencing—must submit a petition that includes:
- A written academic plan detailing the exception requested and how requirements will be met, and/or
- Verification of current or planned course registration, as applicable
Directions for exception petitions will be communicated through the cohort canvas page. Submission does not guarantee approval, and access will not be granted pending review.
Continuation Policy
Continuation of Program
While the University has general regulations governing scholastic eligibility for continuation, the Department of Construction Management has adopted additional requirements in order to make the best use of departmental resources and to provide reasonable assurance of academic success of our majors.
Construction Management Majors who are considering dropping a CM course, using the Current Quarter Drop process (replaces Annual Quarter Drop process), should carefully read this Satisfactory Progress Continuation Policy and contact our department undergraduate advisor.
The following criteria and procedures will be applied to all undergraduate students majoring in Construction Management for determining continuance in the major. Students are encouraged to frequently review their academic progress, and may seek advising from the department undergraduate advisor at any time.
- Our undergraduate program is designed for students to enroll full-time in Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarters and start the upper-division core courses in their second-to-last year, completing them before the capstone series.
- Students are required to complete the general education requirements of the major. Some of the credits applied to these requirements may also fulfill major requirements. In addition to the general education requirements, a UW student earning any Bachelor’s degree must meet the following University requirements:
- Earn a total minimum of 180 quarter credits
- A minimum of 45 credits taken as a matriculated University of Washington student (a minimum of 45 of your final 60 credits must be taken at the UW)
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0
- Full-time students must complete 12 or more credits per quarter among those listed in the completion requirements. To meet minimum graduation requirements within the conventional timeframe, students are expected to average 15 credits per quarter and graduate within 12 quarters/210 credits, or as soon as all degree requirements have been completed, in accordance with the UW Satisfactory Progress Policy. Except for approved concurrent degree plans, the CM Department will not approve degree plans that delay graduation beyond this timeframe in order to take courses that are not required for the CM major.
- Students admitted through the Freshman Direct Admission (FD) Pathway should plan to complete the major in four academic years after admission to the university and the major. Students admitted through the Early Admit Admission (ED) Pathway should plan to complete the major in three academic years after admission to the university and the major. Students admitted through the Upper Division Admission (UD) Pathway should plan to complete the major in two academic years after admission to the university and the major.
- X, NC, and NS grades do not satisfy degree requirements, and S grades may only count towards specific degree requirements in Extraordinary Circumstances Quarters.
- Students must maintain a minimum 2.00 UW GPA AND a minimum 2.50 cumulative GPA in upper-division courses completed in the College of Built Environments. The CM Department will review academic progress each quarter. Students who fall below either GPA threshold will be placed on academic alert, warning, or drop, and will receive a registration hold until they meet with the department’s undergraduate advisor to discuss their academic progress (see Review and Notification of Progress section). CM students are also subject to the UW Low Scholarship Policy.
- In alignment with the department’s Registration Groups policy, course registration is managed using group codes to ensure students progress through the curriculum in a structured and sequenced manner. Because these codes protect course access for students following the intended plan of study, the department does not typically adjust or override group codes for reasons such as accelerating graduation, study abroad, internships, taking a quarter off, or enrolling in courses out of sequence. Students considering plans that may affect sequencing should meet with the undergraduate advisor as early as possible to discuss options and implications.
- Any second major that is declared in addition to CM constitutes a concurrent degree (requiring a minimum of 225 credits). Students pursuing a concurrent degree must draft a degree plan outlining all remaining requirements for both majors and meet with advisors in both departments to determine whether the plan is feasible within UW Satisfactory Progress Policy before the second degree is declared. Students pursuing a concurrent degree are expected to make progress towards both degrees simultaneously.
- Students unable to enroll full-time should meet with the department’s undergraduate advisor to put together a part-time degree plan and must complete at least one course each quarter applicable to their degree requirements. CM students are responsible for obtaining approval from any other relevant offices (e.g., Financial Aid, International Student Services) prior to enrolling part-time.
- CM students who plan to take time off from the university should meet with the department’s undergraduate advisor before taking time off to discuss how this will impact their academic plan. CM students are also responsible for obtaining approval from any other relevant office (e.g., Financial Aid, International Student Services) prior to taking time off. Students who are not enrolled for two or more consecutive quarters (excluding Summer quarter) will receive a registration hold. These students will need to complete the university’s Returning Student Process and will need to meet with the department’s undergraduate advisor before their registration hold will be removed.
The Department of Construction Management reviews the academic progress of all majors at the end of each quarter. Continuation status is determined by whether students meet the minimum standards outlined in this policy, with particular emphasis on the minimum GPA thresholds specified in Criteria 4.
If a student fails to meet continuation standards in any quarter, they will be placed on Alert. Continued violations in consecutive quarters will result in escalation to Warning. A pattern of academic difficulty—whether consecutive or recurring—may result in Drop status as described below.
Alert
A student will be placed on Alert when they fail to meet continuation standards in any quarter. Alert status provides early notification and promotes timely engagement with academic advising and campus resources. Students placed on Alert will receive an email notification, and a registration hold will be placed on their account.
To remove the hold, students must:
- Acknowledge the Alert via email, and
- Meet with the department’s undergraduate advisor.
Failure to complete these requirements will prevent registration for future quarters
Warning
A student will be placed on Warning when they fail to meet continuation standards in a second, but not necessarily consecutive quarters. Students on Warning will receive an email notification and a registration hold.
To remove the hold, students must:
- Submit a self‑assessment form,
- Meet with the department’s undergraduate advisor, and
- Discuss a graduation plan.
Failure to complete these requirements will prevent registration for future quarters.
Drop
A student will be placed on Drop status when they fail to meet continuation standards in any three quarters within the most recent four‑quarter review period, indicating a pattern of academic difficulty that is not limited to consecutive terms. Students placed on Drop status will receive an email with appeal instructions. The appeal deadline will be stated in the notification, and students are permitted one appeal of a drop decision.
Appeals must be submitted as a formal written letter to the Department Chair. In their appeal, students may include any relevant supporting information, such as:
- Applicable employment experience
- Record of honors, activities, and service
- Reasons for choosing the CM major
- Explanation of any extenuating circumstances that affected academic performance and how these issues are being managed or resolved
- Other relevant factors (e.g., health, financial, or family challenges)
In addition, the appeal must include an academic plan that demonstrates how the student will return to good academic standing and meet all CM graduation requirements. This plan must:
- Identify each remaining course required for graduation, including any repeats of courses in which the student earned low grades.
- Specify average CBE GPA grade needed in remaining coursework to meet or exceed the required threshold.
- Present a realistic timeline and course sequence that allows the student to meet these GPA expectations by graduation, assuming their proposed strategies for addressing previous challenges are effective.
If an appeal is not approved, or if a student chooses not to appeal dismissal, they will be assigned a premajor or extended premajor degree code. In this case, the student is considered dismissed from the CM major. The Department reserves the right to drop dismissed students from any future CM coursework that requires declared‑major status for enrollment.
If an appeal is approved, the student must make satisfactory progress as outlined in their approval notification. Failure to meet these expectations in any subsequent quarter will result in dismissal from the major. There is no opportunity to appeal this final dismissal.
Removing Alert, Warning, or Drop Status
Continuation status may be revised if the student’s academic record demonstrates sufficient improvement to meet or exceed continuation standards. Students should consult the department’s undergraduate advisor regarding potential status changes, reinstatement conditions, and individualized academic planning.
University Policies
- Satisfactory Progress Policy: This policy outlines the points at which UW undergraduates will receive registration holds if they have not made satisfactory progress towards graduation.
- Satisfactory/Non-Satisfactory (S/NS) Grading and Extraordinary Circumstances Quarters: This page describes how S/NS grading works and how that differs in Extraordinary Circumstances Quarters and Non-Extraordinary Circumstances Quarters. Outside of an Extraordinary Circumstances Quarter, S graded courses cannot be used towards major and degree requirements. Additional grading information can be found on the UW Grading System page in the General Catalog.
- Registration Tampering and Abuse: This policy describes the registration activities which are classified as registration tampering and abuse under the UW Student Conduct Code and related disciplinary actions. Registering for extra seats to hold spaces for other students, buying or selling seats, or using robots or other automated tools to submit registration requests is expressly forbidden.
- Quarter Off Eligibility Policy: This policy describes the eligibility criteria for undergraduates to take one quarter off from the university, as well as the registration implications and steps that must be taken to re-enroll if a student takes off more than one quarter consecutively. Students should review the Continuation Policy above and schedule an appointment with the advisor before taking a quarter off and before returning to the university. Students considering time off should also consult with other relevant UW offices (e.g., International Student Services, Financial Aid).
