Dr. Katharina Klemt-Albert is director of the of the Department of Construction Management and Digital Solutions at Leibniz University in Hannover. She is also the founder and CEO of albert.ing GmbH, where she consults building owners and planners on the implementation and realization of Building Information Modeling (BIM). Dr. Klemt-Albert has 14 years of knowledge and experience in different top-management positions at Deutsche Bahn AG in areas of project management and BIM. In her previous position as CTO of an international engineering and consulting company with 1,500 associates she was responsible for the realization of major projects worldwide with focus to Germany, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Singapore and China. Her personal interest is to develop technical innovations and their practical implementation.


Partnership-based project collaboration anchored in a Common Data Environment

By implementing the method Building Information Modeling (BIM) in projects, there are new challenges and opportunities for digital collaboration. For a successful and sustainable implementation of the method in projects, organizations and companies, it is necessary to understand the requirements of each project stakeholder and provide specific qualification approaches.

The presentation focuses on how the client of a project can identify qualified contractors during tender phase and how training concepts for multidisciplinary teams can look like. Especially the qualification of working in a Common Data Environment could be very useful for a better understanding of a role-based collaboration. Furthermore, it is beneficial to bring project teams at defined project stages locally together. Regarding collaboration and communication in BIM projects, research outcomes at the innovative “X LAB“ (Leibniz Universität, Germany) are introduced as well as experiences of qualification and training approaches are presented.

Assessing BIM Compliance: Tools, Workflows, and Analytics

Dr. Sheryl Staub-French, University of British Columbia

A growing number of owner organizations are requiring BIM as part of project delivery and information handover.   A key challenge in moving towards this type of digitally-enabled delivery of projects is assessing the compliance of the multi-disciplinary BIM throughout the project lifecycle.  This presentation will describe the results of a research project that investigated BIM compliance assessment on a large hospital project with stringent BIM requirements.  We will describe the different tools used to assess compliance and the changes to workflows required to support this process.  We will demonstrate how visual analytics helped to better understand model health and the status of compliance, and to identify areas of concern for the client and team.  Finally, we will discuss lessons learned and the need for broader, more performance-based BIM requirements.

Resolving complex environmental and economic issues with BIM

Sara Omrani, Queensland University of Technology 

One Bligh St is a prestige office building located in the Sydney CBD, with views over Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Opera House which conflict with the optimum location of sun control devices. This presentation will demonstrate how a whole of building approach was taken to optimise rental returns while providing a high level of sustainability in the building (6 Green Stars). The use of a double skin façade and a central full height, naturally ventilated atrium are key to providing the desired sustainable outcomes.

Speaker Bio

Robert Hartung is a research assistant and PhD candidate at the Institute of Construction Management and Digital Engineering (ICoM) at Leibniz Universität Hannover in Germany. His research focuses on the reduction of multi-dimensional complexity of construction projects caused by the interaction of technical challenges, dynamic project management and communication processes. Robert Hartung works on research projects for standardization of collaboration processes supported by digital tools and workflows as well as on concepts for an expanding application of Building Information Modeling in the AEC sector.

Dr. Staub-French is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and the Goldcorp Professor for Women in Engineering at the University of British Columbia.  She received her B.Sc in Civil Engineering from Santa Clara University and her M.Sc and PhD from Stanford University. Dr. Staub-French’s research is focused on understanding and improving best practices for the delivery of sustainable building construction projects through effective and collaborative use of building information modeling (BIM).  She has over 15 years of consulting and research experience studying the technological and organizational issues of BIM implementation within different types of AEC organizations and across different types of building projects.  She has contributed more than 75 papers in leading journals and conferences on BIM and related topics, and has contributed to the development of guidelines and best practices for BIM adoption and implementation.  She is actively engaged with industry to advance BIM adoption, currently serving on the Education Committee for BuildingSMART Canada.

Sara Omrani is a research associate mainly researching the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM). She completed her Architectural Engineering degree in Iran. She has submitted her PhD thesis on natural ventilation in multi-storey residential apartments. Prior to coming to Australia to undertake her postgraduate degree Sara worked as an architect in Iran, mainly on multi-story residential apartments. She has also worked in Australia for a consultant on building energy analysis.
